Biography

Francine Potvin is an artist, a wild flora enthusiast and the mother of three young men. For the last forty years her work has been presented in Quebec and elsewhere. From 1993 to 2020 she taught at Concordia University. She is the recipient of scholarships from the Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts and the APTUC. In 2017 Francine was chosen as a guest artist for the Canada C3 expedition. This journey took her from Nain (Labrador & Newfoundland) to Iqaluit (Nunavut), discovering unsuspected landscapes and striking human realities.

Artist statement

I’ve had a long and passionate relationship with the plant world and with ceramics. I am intrigued by the challenging co-existence of Homo sapiens and nature.

For me, the realization of the true ecological Self is only possible as part of the Buddhist notion of interdependence. Plant life, living processes and ceramics are both the subjects and the fertile exploratory terrain in my creative process.

I am equally fascinated by the physical, chemical, biological and suprasensible qualities of plants. I have a strong interest in botany and herbalism. Plants are spiritually satisfying. Tending the garden, creating botanical images, and working with clay nourish my spiritual journey and vice-versa.

Human history and natural history are mutually inclusive disciplines; nature and culture constantly interweave and mingle, they are not separated.

The awe-inspiring secret life of plants and the fascinating archetypal symbolism of clay forms are driving forces in my work. My aim is to create images and objects that have iconic resonance and the potential to introduce new feelings, alternative patterns of thought and nonconform representations of nature, reviving a feeling of reverence and enchantment towards other life forms. An invitation to contemplation, rootedness, and the reinventing of images of the anima mundi.

Francine Potvin est une artiste, une passionnée de flore sauvage et la mère de trois jeunes hommes. Depuis les quarante dernières années, ses travaux sont présentés au Québec et ailleurs. De 1993 à 2020 elle enseigne à l’Université Concordia. Elle est récipiendaire de bourses du Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec, du Conseil des Arts du Canada et de l’APTUC. En 2017 Francine a été choisie comme artiste invitée de l’expédition Canada C3. Ce périple l’a mené de Nain (Terre-Neuve & Labrador) à Iqaluit ( Nunavut ), à la découverte de paysages insoupçonnés et de réalités humaines percutantes.

Déclaration de l’artiste

Ma façon d’appréhender, de percevoir et d’envisager ma place dans le monde est fondée sur la très ancienne notion bouddhiste d’interconnexion qui lie tous les phénomènes et toutes les manifestations du vivant. L’impermanence y est aussi un élément clef. Ma quête spirituelle nourrit ma pratique artistique et vice versa.

Pour AvantAge (Reinvention) je propose deux sculptures de la série Règne Chaotique. Le naturaliste suédois Carl von Linné envisagea, en 1767, le règne chaotique pour classer les animaux-plantes. Pour moi, la notion de chaos évoque la crise environnementale. J’utilise une technique de trempage de la matière végétale dans l’argile papier pour créer des assemblages hybrides où je deviens faussaire de corail.

Je présente aussi trois vaisseaux façonnés à la main. L’idée du vaisseau; du pot comme forme sculpturale, est liée aux notions de rituel et de célébration. L’intégration d’un galet poli par la mer, qui sert à la fois pour former chaque vaisseau et pour le sceller, témoigne du lien immémorial entre l’humain et la nature dont il fait partie. Ces vaisseaux sont enfumés à la sciure de bois. Le façonnage et l’enfumage deviennent des rituels. Ici l’argile est nue, peau-fossile libre de toute glaçure, elle respire, elle est douce au toucher.
